What's the difference between Essdee SoftCut and traditional grey linoleum for block printing, and which is better for fine detail work?

Traditional grey lino is made from linseed oil and cork, making it firmer and more rigid; it often requires warming up before carving and can crumble if cut too thin. Essdee SoftCut is a synthetic, rubber-like material that is much softer, smoother, and carves effortlessly in any direction without crumbling or cracking.

For ultra-fine detail work, traditional grey lino is slightly better because its firm structure holds tiny, crisp lines under printing pressure without flexing. However, SoftCut is far easier and safer to carve—especially for long carving sessions—and holds fine details exceptionally well without the risk of the block chipping or breaking away.

I am just getting started with linocutting—what are the essential supplies I need?

To start relief printing at home, you need four core essentials:

Carving Substrate: An Essdee SoftCut or traditional lino block to carve your design into.
Cutting Tools: A lino cutter handle with interchangeable V-shaped (for fine lines) and U-shaped (for clearing background space) blades.
Inking Brayer (Roller): A smooth rubber roller to spread an even layer of ink over your carved block.
Block Printing Ink: A viscous, water-based block printing ink that dries evenly and cleans up easily with soap and water.

You can return items to us within 30 days of purchase for a full refund, subject to them being in good condition and in their original packaging. This will have to be done at your own expense and using your chosen carrier.
